Norfolk Southern Agrees to Settlement for East Palestine Derailment

Resolution for class action lawsuit now pending in court.

Railroad company Norfolk Southern has agreed to pay $600 million to resolve a class action lawsuit against its freight train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, in February 2023. The train derailment led officials to conduct a massive burn of millions of gallons of toxic chemicals near the small town, polluting the air and water.

Norfolk Southern filed its settlement proposal this week, which must be approved by the attending judge. The settlement would resolve all legal claims within a 20-mile radius of the crash, covering around 100,000 class action members. The attorneys who brought the action against Norfolk Southern stated that it will also provide compensation “for past, present and future personal injuries resulting from exposure to the chemicals involved.”

Norfolk Southern does not admit legal liability or wrongdoing by settling this class action lawsuit.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the judge to be discerning in considering the proposed settlement to the class action lawsuit against Norfolk Southern.
  • For U.S. transportation officials and members of Congress as they seek to ensure railway safety.
